Wedding Tips

The following tips are generated from my first hand experience with weddings.  All the tips are completely random and I add to the list as I encounter new ideas and helpful tid bits.  I hope you find it useful!

• Don’t want to go for an open bar?  Have a Toonie bar!  Guest will appreciate it and you won’t blow the budget!

• Chair covers just might be worth it!  I’m all for cost cutting but if you are going to splurge on one thing make it chair covers.  They really do add quite a bit to the decor.

• Play the shoe game!

• Have a Candy Buffett!  Raid the bulk barn and get some cute bowls at the dollar store.

• Don't get wrapped up in photo print packages.  You can do it cheaper yourself!

• Cupcakes instead of a cake!

• Thank the kitchen staff but don't ask them to come out. They are busy and it takes forever to get them out leading to awkward pauses.  Write them a note or buy them some snacks to have in the back instead.

• Don't have centre pieces that are too high.  It hinders conversation.

• Outline a kissing game for your guests.  Don't just let them clink glasses.  It will be cute for the first 17 times but you will be dreading that sound by the end of the night.

• Do a slideshow.  The public showing of baby pictures is worth the digital projector rental.

• Bathroom toiletries basket?  A cool idea but never fully utilized by the guests (everything is just stuffed in pockets at the end of the night). If you want to do one make it simple and utilitarian.

• Seriously.  Have a candy buffet.  They are so awesome!

• Don’t use fish in the centre pieces.  It makes me sad when animals are used as decor.  It does look great but these little guys have about a 70% chance of being flushed or forgotten at the end of the night.  How are your guests supposed to transport them home anyway?

• Pot lights under tables creates a really cool effect.

• Don't wear heels under the wedding dress.  No one will see the running shoes or slippers...or Crocs.

• Don’t base your speech on something you found on the internet.  Research and get ideas but you can very often tell when someone has poached their speech.

• For your photos include locations or props that are important to you as a couple.  This will add even more meaning to your pictures! (I’ve done samurai swords, boxing rings, comic books, movie theatres, pets and even the same location that the bride’s parents used 30 years ago!)

• Make a list of all the pictures you want to get that day.  The list does not always get used but it is a good exercise for you to do before the day so you have had a chance to organize your thoughts around who you want pictures with.

• Concerned about drinking and driving?  Many cab companies will allow you to set up a tab for you guests to use so everyone has a safe way home!

• Try to make favours utilitarian.  Make a donation to a charity that has meaning to you or have candy that guests can be eat later that night.  Many of your guests don’t necessarily need a keepsake to remember your wedding!
